
THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK (Holy or Not?)

Introduction: Is Sunday, the first day of the week, holy?
1. Did God rest or work on the first day of Creation? Genesis 1:3-5.
2. In the New Testament, how often is the first day mentioned?
Answer: Eight, Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:2, 9, Luke 24:1, John 20:1, 19,
Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2.
3. Is the first day ever spoken of as a holy day? No.
4. Did Jesus Christ ever use the words first day? No.
5. How do the gospel writers speak of the first day? Matthew 28:1,
Mark 16:2, 9, Luke 24:1, John 20:1.
Note: In all of these verses, no special mention of the first day is
made. The first day is only the day that the women came to the tomb.
6. Was there ever a meeting on the first day of the week? John 20:19.
Note: Notice that it says that they were gathered for fear of the Jews. This was not a worship service; they were hiding from the authorities.
Conclusion: So far, we have not found any evidence that the first day of the week is holy. What we have found is that it is just another day.
